Pskov is one of the oldest cities in Russia, first mentioned in the Laurentian Chronicle under 903. In 1348-1510 it was the capital of the independent Pskov Republic. In 1510 the city became part of the Russian centralized state. Until the beginning of the 18th century, Pskov was one of the largest cities in Russia and Europe, the most important defensive and commercial center of the country.
